The local sardine industry may represent the height of achievement in Swallow Falls, but high school student Flint isn’t satisfied with the status quo. He dreams big, and spends all his free time creating all sorts of crazy gizmos with the sincere hope and confidence that they will make the world a better place...eventually.
Sam is the new girl in Swallow Falls. With her strong opinions, irrepressible smarts, and a personality that “sparks”, she doesn’t quite fit in. Sam knows what it’s like to have a passion for a subject no one else seems to understand. She’s crazy about the weather, and dreams of one day being a meteorologist.
Intensely practical Tim Lockwood runs the town’s Bait and Tackle shop. He doesn’t have much in the way of imagination, which means he has trouble understanding Flint’s fascination with inventing crazy gadgets.
He may sport a Flint-invented thought-translator, but Steve is by all other accounts a normal, food- obsessed, poop-tossing monkey. Even though Steve only speaks the occasional word, Flint considers his monkey-pal to be his devoted lab assistant and friend.
Sardine spokesbaby Brent is convinced his “celebrity status” makes him more important than anyone else in town. Captain of the school mascot team, he’s on-again, off-again friends with Flint and Sam, but his ultimate interest is always in himself.
Mayor Shelbourne won a landslide victory in the last Swallow Falls election, riding solely on a pro- sardine platform. It’s Shelbourne’s job to look out for the town’s interests...and if those interests benefit him personally, he does an okay job.
Gil is the Mayor's deeply devoted son and a total cheerleader for all things sardines. Gil loves to enforce his dad’s wild whims and help maintain Swallow Fall’s status quo, which means he’s often butting heads with Flint and Sam as they do everything they can to improve the town.
Earl is school safety officer and the sole teacher at Cannery High. A stickler for rules, there’s little Mr. Earl is more passionate about than educating...except for his beloved baby son, Cal.
Manny is the shockingly capable kid who runs the school’s audio-visual department...and not surprisingly, the first kid to grow a moustache.
